Fern Ticket
George Evans, the venerable chairman of All
Friends Around The Wrekin has a booklet out. Already on its second
reprint and the only book about The Wrekin, like ever!
Join George for a walk up and around The Wrekin, learn all the important landmarks and all the historical aspects of The Wrekin.
BTW: A fern ticket is the mythical permit to adventure on The Wrekin or
in its magical forest. Couples spotted leaving a dance at the Forest
Glen were asked. "Have you got your fern ticket?"

Planning applications
My reply to Jenny. Perhaps as a group, we could get more publicity. But my personal feeling is, that the more letters that pile in to Telford and Wrekin Council, the better. Just one group letter isn't enough.
However, I have no experience of fighting planning applications like this. And as there is going to be more and more pressure on green belt land and more fights, all over the country, we need to find links and therefore experience and use these as a group repository for our group knowledge.
If anyone has any further information, about development plans near The Wrekin, please tell us. Or, any bright ideas, or web links about fighting such battles.
I have visited the Wrekin two times in summer, 2004 and 2006. I was fascinated with its beautiful natural scenery and much interested in archaeological aspects such as Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate and so on.
I'm surprised to hear the news about the plan of the rifle range. I oppose it strongly. I oppose any destruction of nature and beautiful scenery. I hope the Wrekin is kept as it is.
I will visit the Wrekin again when I travel to England next time.

Rifle range - proposed holiday chalets
We live next to the site of the former Forest Glen at the foot of the
Wrekin and wish to register our objection to the proposal to develop
the old Rifle Range. This land can readily be seen over a wide area
and should be allowed to remain as, effectively, green fields.
Development along the Wrekin Course is of individual buildings related to agricultural use or sole dwellings.
Creating a pocket of intensive development would be inappropriate and disfiguring in or adjacent to an AONB.

Treetops
{Letters to Emma Green, the T&W Planning Officer, if you've sent one as well, it would be nice to see it here too, on this website. Mail it to me, or add it to the comments.)
Canada knows
I live a long way away in Canada, but one thing struck me was that the Wrekin was once included in the South Shropshire AONB. I do not think that the boundary has changed so the designation must have some relevance to the situation - or am I missing something.
Regards to Derrick Moore if he is still a member of your group.

Shot at at the top
Many years ago I assisted you on an event at the rifle range. I am still able to assist you if neccessary in many ways.
I wonder if any one has found any bullets on the top. I was machine gunned by a German plane that had moved in to attack the trainers that were in that area.
Ambassador of goodwill,

Important points!
To Emma Green, Telford & Wrekin Planning Officer
I wish to register my objection to the proposal to develop the old rifle range for the following reasons:
a) Creating a pocket of development would be inappropriate right up to the boundaries of the AONB (and it would be very visible).
b) It would set a precedent for development along that side of the Wrekin which is the most important local area of green space and wildlife.
c) It would create a new focus for people pressure on a part of the Wrekin which has previously received very little (new pressure points should be part of a structured plan rather than responses to individual planning applications).
d) By working together with other local agencies Telford & Wrekin should be developing a green space strategy that identifies areas that should never be developed - this should include all the boundaries of the Wrekin.
e) The rifle range is part of the local heritage. Other uses could be proposed which inform local visitors.
Yours sincerely,
Jenny Joy (Wellington resident)
I see that Orleton Estate are proposing to build holiday chalets on the rifle range field.
It might be interesting to know if anyone has ideas about this proposal.
I've known the field since using it to practise shooting in Home Guard days - 1940 I think. Perhaps some of the remains should be preserved as an ancient monument.
Should we not be encouraging people to take their holidays in their own country? Unless the development is gross or ugly (not likely from Peter Holt) I don't have any strong feelings.
Perhaps it might be a good idea to post this on the AFRTW website and encourage sensible comment.
Stay happy,
George the Ancient.

(The picture is from last week, me and mine went 'a-bullet-hunting.' They'll be taking into school for 'show and tell.' At first they were hard to spot, but once you knew what you were looking for, we found quite a few in 20 minutes or so. I bet if you went up there with a my lad's 'metal protector' you'd find many, many more. I told him that they used to tie Germans to the targets...)
Later: I looked on Google Maps, for the rifle range, and spied from the sky a wonderful view. Go there yourself and roam around your favourite hill or click the thumbnail below...
You can clearly see the places where they fired from and the bank into which they fired (running NNE). But what are the lighter striations running NNW?
