How to: post a news item

News items are the paragraphs, or stories that appear in the front page. Full details can be found here though those details could be a little too deep for most users. Below I outline the things you'll need to know to begin to post news items. If you're at all worried by this — don't! Just try it. You won't break anything. If you make something that's a mess, don't worry, I'll come along soon, as I get emails telling me what you've done, and clean it up. I'd much rather you try! Anyway, if you're an ordinary member you'll only be able to create a new news item, it won't be posted to the front page, a Managing Editor will need to move it to there.

I'm assuming that you've already signed up, else were you to go to the new news item page, you'd get this an error telling you (helpfully) that you're not logged in, so don't have any permissions to post anything at all:

dont have enough permission

First up, you need to get to the page for creating new news items, you may want to bookmark this in your favourites, especially if you're going to be posting often, and I hope you do. There is no limit on the number of news items anybody can post in one day, though please use your common sense. If you don't bookmark this page, simply get to it by clicking the link under the Members title, called New news item, it's on every page within the site, as below:

new news item

Then once there, you'll ned to add a title for your news item. If you're linking to another site, you may also want to add a URL for that other site in the URL box. A URL is a web page address like http://www.whatever.com/

Then you'll need to add the actual text for the news item. You can highlight text and embolden, italicise or otherwise enhance this text using the controls on the top of the edit box. Mostly, you'll want to just add plain text, with no such enhancement — mostly such enhancement can look ugly. To separate paragraphs, simply hit the return key twice, thus, having a spare line between paras. To start a new line, you'll need to simply hit the return key once. This is what you see is what you get editing, so the final should look as you see in this editing box.

Oh, and don't forget to pick which department you want this news item to be included in, use the drop down list to pick one.

edit news item

If you know a bit of HTML you may want to swap between the source and what you wee is what you get modes. Mostly, you won't, and certainly you don't need to.

You can ignore the comments check box, leave it on. Also, ignore the ping box. Unless you want to read some more instructions on trackback here.

Pressing the create news item button, will take you to a view of the news item allowing you to re-edit the news item.

Once you're sure that you've created a nice news item, release it, so that a Managing Editor can post it to the front page. We've several, and it won't be long before one of them will make that call. You'll only see this, 'post to front page' if you've enough editorial permissions. That is if you're an editor. If you don't see this button don't worry, your news item is created and is awaiting an editor to approve it.
