The dark forces with bribe money
Here's a snip from the attached PDF. Minutes of Telford and Wrekin Local Access Forum Jan 2012. More here on the council's website.

PDF document: LAF_280312
Free money from the £500,000 coal hole bribe fund.

Wrekin Forest for All
Anthony Francis-Jones updated the LAF regarding Wrekin Forest for All which included greater clarity for the Wrekin Forest, Car Parking, the Donkey Field and Catering. The Rights of Way, way marking and mapping had all been completed.

AGREED – that a bid for £85,000 to the Huntington Lane Community for funding to complete the work on the Donkey Field, the Car Parking and the Catering would be submitted.

It was suggested that the work be timetabled to coincide with the Council’s traffic calming works.

Old toilets for new
Why did they knock the old toilets down and now talk about the need to build new toilets? The reason given was that there was no money to open and maintain the old ones. It seems that a burger van owner will open this new car park and maintain new toilets. Everyday? Unlikely. High days and holidays, if the sun is shining, when there's burgers to serve. But since the other car parking exists, burger man isn't going to get the footfall to sell enough burgers to say in business past the 3 free years. What kind of guarantees, or promises or contracts will burger man have to sign? It'll be a dumb burger man who'll sign anything, he'd need to trial the business first, to see if visitors will follow their noses to his van in enough numbers. Since most visitors are locals, and regular locals, my guess is they'll save their appetite for Sunday dinner at home.

We're also into a flat lining recession. Many families go up The Wrekin with no money knowing there's nothing to buy there. It may be busy, but there's little money in the pockets going there.

Poor burgers for poor people
Currently, there's a fuss about McDonalds sponsoring the Olympics. Is T&WC forcing burgers on the poor of Telford, while the rich go to The Buckatree or The Huntsman?

Once the Rubicon has been crossed the white elephant of a car park and 'facilities' would make a prime location for other developments. Housing, perhaps. Making that donkey field prime time building land.

From LAF's minutes December 2010:
Another issues raised in the debate was one of facilities at the base of the Wrekin including toilet provision and Visitor Centre. Forum Members agreed with the need for such facilities but it was pointed out that it needed considerable financial investment and a political will to lead such a project. There were no firm plans for such facilities at present.

I thought the visitor centre had been aborted due to the dumbness of the business plan. And lo, here we are again threatening the donkey field with another dumb business plan.

Welcome To The Wrekin Truck Stop?

Welcome To The Wrekin Truck stop?

Having moved out of the district last autumn, which in the end all happened very suddenly, I have lost touch with what is happening in respect of the Wrekin. A little amiss of me, in seemingly abandoned everything.

It is of little surprise that we have a planning application submitted for the development of the, “Donkey Field”. The Landowner seems determined to obtain some commercial or monetary for this land, and I dare say any other that they could sell or develop. A car park of this nature I am sure is not planned to enhance the visitor experience to the Wrekin. There is a certain amount of research and anecdotal evidence that a venture of this nature could or would not be self sustaining. This has most probably not gone un noticed by the Landowner. So what are the long term motives for this application? One can only surmise. My own thoughts on this are to attract passing trade off the nearby M54/A5 as a stop off for passing traffic wanting a break from the Motorway. (Think of how busy the A5 Lay-by gets in summer months people taking in the view of The Wrekin.). Note the application has provision for two long vehicles, Coaches, Trucks? The road to the Wrekin is used for some overnight stays by truckers, parking at the side by the Cludeley. The present plans show no provision for Toilets. Chemical portaloos?. Should this application succeed the precedent will have been made for development. Think of the increase in traffic between the Motorway Junction and this site. The road is dangerous to walk on at the best of times. Proliferating traffic on this road. Murderous springs to mind.

However, I may be totally wrong on all this and scrutinisation of the plan would possibly make it a good circuit for a go cart track.
